"Hysteric cards" depicts the traditional "carte napoletane" for briscola and scopa in a new, feminist way.
In some of the cards one can find the symbols of snakes and spiders that are connected to the hundreds of years old south Italian myth of tarantism. The story tells that the bit of the spider (or gaze of the snake) caused hysteric reactions in womxn that where working on the fields. Those bitten by the spider, so called "tarantate", were cured by doing a ritual with dance and music in the chapel of St. Paul in Galatina (south of italy). The belief said that by dancing and sweating, the toxins of the spider would leave the female body and bring it to catharsis, and therefor heal her. The spider became the symbol of a female malady, which in other words translates the suffering, abuse, violence, rape and killing of female existance in a patriarcal society.
