In 1920, Berlin decided to expand its borders: at the time all the so called “Kiezes” (quartiers of Berlin) where small cities around Berlin. Berlin itself was very small, mostly it was that part what today we call Berlin Mitte. By expanding its borders, Berlin became the third biggest city in the world, after London and Los Angeles.
In addition to the 100 years anniversary of the Law of Great Berlin, the illustration class in UDK took part of the exhibition in Rotes Rathaus.
The task was to develop a series on posters thematising different topics around the expansion of the city. This three posters thematize the importance of building a canalisation system.
Rudolf Virchov, a doctor and scientist, found out that the reason why so many people died of Cholera and Thyphus: it was the missing hygiene caused by the water. Berlin needed a new system for a canalisation. The canalisation of Berlin, which recycles effluence was an example for other citiies in Europe. The poster series pictures the development of the Berlin canalisation imagining it in past, present and future times.
